200 years a slave - Croydon's slavery connections

A talk discussing Croydon’s links with slave ownership in the West Indies up to 1838.

This talk will discuss the evidence of Croydon’s links with slave ownership in the West Indies up to 1838 within the context of the award of £20m compensation by the British Government and how it was spent. Books and pamphlets will be on sale at this event.

The talk will be given by Nick Draper. Nick is a member of the UCL Legacies of British Slave-ownership team. He has undertaken pioneering work on slave owners who were paid £20m compensation when Britain banned slavery in the West Indies and how they spent the money.  The team is now researching ownership back to the 1760s.

This event is organised by Croydon Radical History Network.
